To make ranch dressing: Add 1 homemade ranch seasoning packet to 1 cup of buttermilk and 1 cup of mayo.  Stir well with a whisk and refrigerate for a couple hours before serving.  If you don’t have buttermilk , mix together 1 cup of milk and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar and let it sit for 5 minutes, use that instead of the buttermilk.  (I have been meaning to try this with plain yogurt instead of mayo but haven’t yet.  If you try, it let me know how it turns out!)

For ranch dip: Add 1 homemade ranch seasoning packet to a 16oz container of sour cream (2 cups) mix well and refrigerate for a couple hours before serving.

Hope you enjoy these as much as we do!!  Have a Blessed Day 😀

  1. Am here visiting from over at Make It Yourself Monday and I love this recipe for ranch dressing mix. My husband loves ranch dressing but I don’t like the additives so I am definitely going to try it. I also pinned it so I can keep it and others can enjoy it.

Thanks for the recipe, and nice blog.

  2. I have decided that I needed to subscribe to your blog 🙂 I found you on Frugal by Choice twice.. and found what you had posted both times to be incrediably useful. Thanks for taking the time to do this blog. One question.. What area of the country to you live in? The reason I ask.. is some bloggers talk about.. livestock.. growing.. and such but if they don’t state what area of the country they are in and I follow their suggetions, it might (probably won’t) work for me here in Kansas. But if I don’t make allowance for the climate differences.. I will have a failure. Thanks

    1. Hi Kristy, Thanks for the nice comment, you made my day! We live in eastern Washington state. Maybe I should add that to my home page somewhere, you have a good point about climate differences. I hope you’re having nicer spring weather in Kansas than we are, it hailed here 3 different times yesterday….I’m ready for warm sunshine! Have a great day.

  3. Thank you for sharing your recipe with us. I had to buy a couple packs a few weeks ago for a pot luck we were attending and thought, never again these are outrageously expensive! You are a blessing =)

  4. Thanks for the recipe! I am vegan so I can’t use buttermilk to make this but Ii think cashew milk with a little apple cider vinegar will do the trick. I have enjoyed reading through some of your blog posts. I found you on the Frugally Sustainable blog hop. If you get a chance, come check out my homesteading bolg at http://www.aviewfromthecottage.blogspot.com Have a great day!

Oh… I was also wondering… where did you get the wonderful recipe widget that allows people to print a recipe straight from the blog? I have been trying to figure out how to do that myself 🙂

    1. Hi Elle, Thanks for visiting! Let me know how the cashew milk and apple cider turns out. 🙂 The printable recipe is a plugin called EasyRecipe, if you can use plugins it’s pretty handy!

  5. This is brilliant!!! I long ago abandoned sour cream for plain yogurt and I always think how ironic that I am putting a packet of chemicals into something as healthy as yogurt! And the MSG actually stopped me from buying the ranch flavor and I just buy italian dressing mix. Now I will give this a whirl and see what happens!

    1. So I’m not the only one that hears, “Mom, where’s the ranch?” at every meal!! 😀 Thanks for stopping by, have a nice weekend.

  6. Thank you so much for this ranch dressing. I found you on The Country Cook’s weekend potluck. I just bought 3 packs at our Walmart for 1.44 ea. I had never used them before, but I had some new recipes that called for them. I thought the price was too high. Now I can make them myself with spices I already have in my spice cabinet. Thank you again!

  7. I’m so excited to find this recipe! Thanks! Like you I don’t like spending the money on something I can make myself. I’ve used yogurt in place of buttermilk with the packaged dressing mix and you really can’t tell a difference. I make my own yogurt so it’s always on hand for recipes like this.
Check it out, it’s easy to make! http://jodysrecreations.blogspot.com/

  8. I have been looking for something like this for a lonnggg time! I love Ranch dressing but don’t like all the preservatives & MSG, as I’m on a special diet. I mainly eat organic as much as possible, “natural” foods if I have to. Thank you for posting this. I can make this with all organic ingredients!

    1. Hi Diane, we also eat organic as much as possible! Hope you like the ranch dressing and thanks for stopping by and leaving comments!

  9. I just used this to make chicken ranch macaroni salad…this was waaaaaaaay better than a packet and dill you are awesome!!!!!!!

  10. Made your ranch dressing and mixed it with plain greek yogurt with a splash of whole milk and it was AMAZING!!!!

    1. That’s GREAT, thanks for letting me know, I will have to try it! Greek yogurt is so much healthier than mayo. 🙂

  11. Thank you for the recipe for the sausage. My husband wanted the recipe his dad used. It had garlic in it. Can we just add it? And how much? Thank you! It is good to tell others you believe in Jesus. Me too?

    1. Hi Lataine, I think for the breakfast sausage if you want to add garlic, I would start with no more than 1 teaspoon of garlic powder or minced garlic and then add more if it needs it. Thanks for stopping by, I hope this helps!

    1. Hi Kristi, I found a site that says 1 teaspoon of onion powder is equal to 1 tablespoon of dried minced onion. I haven’t tried it with onion powder so let me know if you do, I would like to know how it turns out. Thanks for stopping by!

  12. The more I hop on your site between loads of laundry, the happier I am about doing the laundry.

I am going to make up a bunch of packets of this dressing for my daughter for her birthday. She’s a nurse, and tries to eat healthy, but can’t seem to give up her beloved ranch dressing mix. After making your breakfast sausage seasoning, I know this will be a big hit, too.

The only change I’ll make is to use granulated garlic instead of garlic powder. I find granulated garlic and onion to have better flavor than the powders. Also, I sub yogurt or sour cream for mayo all the time in dressings. Always tastes better to us.

  13. This recipe is great. I do not like ranch, but my mom does, but cannot have any brand because MSG gives her migraines. The seasoning is right, but the dressing does not work with the buttermilk substitution of milk + acid (lactose intolerant), so I had to add more mayo to thicken it, and it still tasted right.

  14. I just made this for the first time and used sour cream instead of the mayo and it turned out wonderfully….like so many of the other recipes I have tried on your site! I look forward to trying others very soon. The sausage and mayo recipes have been a big success for us. Thanks for sharing!
